Specialization on electrical wiring of buildings, machines and stationary is done by an electrician. Electricians are equipped with the knowledge and skill of handling electrical wiring of buildings, stationery and machinery. Electrical engineering is the course in which electricians have done and has got the needed skills to solve electricity related problems. Having a high school diploma or an equivalent degree is what makes up an electrician.
Practical courses, physical science and fundamentals are some of the areas that are focused in high school diploma. Math fundamental requires one to be good in algebra while physical science requires one to have an understanding particularly in physics of electrical current and finally practical courses offer courses such as automotive mechanics, electronics wood shop to be fully complete as an electrician. Vocational programs and apprenticeship are followed after a high school diploma. After undergoing an apprenticeship or vocational program then an electrician applies for a license.
The process of acquiring a license requires of the following; proof of apprenticeship completion, test scores that demonstrate knowledge of NEC and state building codes, relevant fees and proof of having the required amount of experience in electrical trade. Depending on the area of specialization then the roles and responsibilities of an electrician are determined. Forming electrical circuits by connecting electrical wires to components and fixtures and testing completed circuit is one of the role of electrician.
Another role of an electrician is planning the electrical system for new buildings including the best position for electrical outlets, heating outlets, ventilation systems and light fixtures. The next responsibility or role is installing wiring, lighting and control systems in new and existing buildings according to municipal codes. On top of all that an electrician reads and interprets the architect’s blueprints, circuit diagrams and other technical documents.
Electricians specialize in certain areas such as wiring of ships, mobile platforms, data, cable and airplanes. Most courses can be specialized further for example electrical engineering. The work done by electricians is quite demanding and requires their physical presence. By being present electricians are involved in climbing of ladders, lifting tools and supplies. Some of the postures used by electricians during their work is squatting, bending and kneeling.
When choosing an electrician there are some factors that are considered and they include; interpersonal skills, knowledge of safety codes, character traits, business ethics and intellectual ability. Time management, customer service and personal service, clerical abilities and working with a team or people management are the basic business skills in business understanding. As for interpersonal skills the following are required; active listening, communication skills, observation skills and empathy and instructing.
